Aubrey Greaves Discusses Hispanic Heritage Month and The Importance of Diversity in The Workplace

Headshot-1We spoke with Aubrey Greaves, Claims Assistant in our Moorestown office, about Hispanic History Month and her Puerto Rican heritage.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you, and why is it important to celebrate it?

It recognizes the achievements and contributions that have been made to our society. There are several cultures that are celebrated within Hispanic History Month, and I love that even though we are different, we are the same with our pride in our ancestry.

How did you get interested in insurance?

It was a career recommended to me by a friend who thought I would be a good fit. And she was right, I love what I do in Claims. I like being able to assist the adjusters with their claims and see what happens “behind the scenes.”

Do you and your family have any traditions that are important to you?

Yes, we do. When the late fall/winter months come along, we get together over a weekend and make something called pasteles. We make them with plantains, which are made into a “masa.” Then we stuff the plantains with roasted pork shoulder and some olives. You can add what you like but we keep it simple. Next, you wrap them like a little package. Once all the pasteles are made, you can freeze them or cook them immediately for an amazing treat. These are a labor of love and take two maybe three days to make.

We also make a popular holiday drink called Coquito. I am usually the one to make it for my family. It is coconut, rum, evaporated milk, and sweetened milk topped off with cinnamon and vanilla extract. There are several ways to make this, but the end result is a fantastic cocktail perfect for the holidays.

What makes you the proudest or gives you the most joy about your heritage?

I love my Puerto Rican culture, as it is rich with history and food. I love the food we have, and how we show our love with the food we make. We also know how to throw a party! The holidays and festivals start around Thanksgiving and end with the San Sebastián Festival in the middle of January.

Why is it essential to have a corporate culture that embraces diversity?

I believe it is important to celebrate all cultures and backgrounds. Everyone is unique, and their culture should be celebrated. By understanding how others live and celebrate, it makes you wiser and more understanding as a person.
